William Wordsworth (he belonged to the "lake school” - “jezerni skoly basniku) made the Lake District famous. The largest lake is the Windermere. The oldest steam boat is Dolly and is 150 years old. The popular activities are skating, sailing, climbing, canoeing.

The symbol of York is white rose. The cathedral was built in 1220 and the special about it is that there are coloured windows but not coloured walls. George Stevenson invented the first steam engine (steam train) and you can see it in The National Railway Museum.

The Oxford University started in 12th century (it is the oldest in England). There are 12000 students now. The teachers are called dons and the special clothes are called grounns. Very popular is panting (pant is a sort of boat - jak se odpichuje ode dna). There are gardens with maze (bludiště).
Bath was built in 18. century because of healing springs (léčivý prameny) and now there is a spa. The natural mineral water is 48 °C hot. Romans started building public baths, swimming pools and temples there. Important person is Sally Lunn. She can make new kind of cakes so she has a monument there.

Plymouth is the Devon's largest city. In 1555 Spanish ships attacked it, from this place in 1588 Sir Francis Drake set out to beat the Spanish Armada and in 1620 a group pf Puritans - Pilgrims Fathers - who wanted to escape from religious persecution sailed from here in a ship called Mayflower to settle the American continent.
